Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, disabled, or have certain chronic conditions. You can get Medicare if you or your spouse have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, or if you qualify for Social Security disability benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits
You can sign up for Medicare online at www.ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or in person at your local Social Security office. You can sign up during your initial enrollment period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after your 65th birthday. You can also sign up during a special enrollment period if you have a qualifying life event, such as losing your employer-sponsored health coverage
Medicare has four parts: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility stays, home health care, and hospice care. Part B covers outpatient medical services, such as doctor visits, lab tests, and preventive care. Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to get your Medicare benefits through a private health plan that may offer extra benefits and lower costs. Part D covers prescription drugs through a private plan that you choose.
The cost of Medicare depends on several factors, such as your income, your coverage choices, and your health care needs. Generally, you pay a monthly premium for Part B and Part D, and a yearly deductible and coinsurance for Part A and Part B. You may also pay a monthly premium, deductible, copayment, or coinsurance for Part C, depending on the plan you choose. Some people may qualify for help with their Medicare costs through programs such as Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, or Extra Help
Medicare Supplement, also known as Medigap, is a type of insurance that helps pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. You can buy a Medigap policy from a private insurance company if you have Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to get your Medicare benefits through a private health plan that may offer extra benefits and lower costs. You cannot have both Medigap and Medicare Advantage at the same time
Yes, Medicare covers the COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to you. You can get the vaccine from any provider that participates in the Medicare program or is enrolled to administer COVID-19 vaccines. You do not need a referral from your doctor or a prior authorization from your plan. You can also get the vaccine if you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medigap policy.
